Frequently asked questions

Worth knowing.

The questions we are asked most, with an honest answer. Yours not among them? Call or email, it costs you nothing.

What does a new flat roof cost?

There is no fixed price. It depends on the square metres, what is on there now, how many layers have to come off, whether insulation is going in and how easy the roof is to reach. Peter comes out, measures it and works it through to a single figure. That costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Is the quote really free and without obligation?

Yes. Coming out, measuring up and pricing it are free, and you are under no obligation. If a repair will do, we are completely open about that too.

How long does a bituminous roof last?

A well-laid two-layer bituminous roof lasts twenty to thirty years. Exactly how long depends on the number of layers, the substrate, the drainage and whether the roof is checked now and then. A blocked outlet shortens its life faster than anything else.

What does the 10-year guarantee cover?

Every roof handed over carries a 10-year guarantee on watertightness. That is stated in the quote, not just on the website. If it does leak within that time because of the work, it is put right at no cost.

How long does laying a flat roof take?

That depends on the area, on how the roof can be reached and on what comes out from under the old layer. When measuring up we agree which days it will be, so you know in advance where you stand.

Can my roof be replaced with solar panels on it?

Yes. The panels come off, the roof beneath is renewed and the panels go back on. It is wise to do it in one go: you cannot replace a roof underneath panels that are still in place, and the panels usually outlast the roofing below them.

Can you work in winter or in the rain?

Bitumen needs a dry substrate, so in rain or frost laying a new roof does not go ahead and shifts by a day. A leak is always dealt with, though: an emergency repair is possible in almost any weather.

Can I have insulation fitted at the same time?

Yes, and that is the moment to do it. Insulation goes under the roofing, so during a replacement it costs only the material and a little extra labour. Insulating later means opening the roof up again.

Does De Jong Dakbedekkingen work for businesses and homeowners' associations?

Yes. Alongside private roofs we take on commercial buildings, apartment blocks and work for contractors. For an association you get a quote you can put straight to the members' meeting.

Which towns does De Jong Dakbedekkingen work in?

The service area is the Drechtsteden and greater Rotterdam: Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, Zwijndrecht, Dordrecht, Papendrecht, Sliedrecht, Alblasserdam, Ridderkerk, Barendrecht, Rotterdam and the towns around them. Not sure whether yours is included? Just call.
