Roof edges, roof trim and fascia boards.

The roof edge is the first thing to fail and the last thing people look at. Even though nearly all wind damage starts there.

Roof edges and fascia, and what you notice of it

What the work involves

Roof edges and fascia

A roof edge catches the wind, keeps the water on the roof and protects the end of the roofing. I work with aluminium roof trim and with upstands that the bitumen wraps around. Fascia boards that have started to rot are replaced before the new edge goes on, otherwise you are back here in five years.

When you need this

The signs

Roofing that rattles in the wind, an edge working loose, or a fascia board that feels soft. By the sea and along the river this happens faster than further inland.

Practical

Why the edge gives way first

Everywhere else on the roof the covering lies on its own. Only at the edge does it stop and have to be fixed to something. So that is where the wind gets purchase, and where nearly all damage starts. If the roof trim comes loose anywhere, the wind pulls underneath, it grows with every storm and eventually the water gets behind it. So with a new edge I look first at the timber beneath it: if the fascia is soft, that comes out before the new edge goes on.

What people ask about this

My roofing rattles in a strong wind. Is that bad?

It is a warning. Loose sections tear in time and then the water gets behind them. Have it looked at before autumn arrives.

Does the fascia have to come out for a new roof edge?

If it feels soft or sags, yes. Screwing a new edge onto rotten timber makes no sense, because you will be back at it in a few years.

What is the difference between roof trim and edge cladding?

The trim sits over the head of the roofing and keeps the water on the roof. The cladding is the finish on the outside, the part you see from the street.

What it might involve

What kind of roof is it?

Aluminium roof trim

A profile over the head of the roofing. Keeps the water on the roof and protects the edge from the wind.

Fascia boards

The timber or clad section under the roof edge. If it rots away, a new edge has nothing left to fix to.

Roof edge cladding

The finish on the outside. Often aluminium or composite board, and usually what you see as the roof edge from the street.

Rebuilding upstands

Where the roof meets rising brickwork. Here the bitumen has to run up past the water line.

Repair after wind damage

An edge lifted after a storm. Repairing it quickly stops the water getting behind it.

Drip edges and copings

The finish that makes water drip clear of the edge instead of running down the facade.
