Roof renovation
Sometimes a new layer can go straight onto the existing covering. If there is moisture in the old layers or the insulation is soaked through, working over the top traps the moisture underneath and everything comes off. I assess that on site, and you hear which of the two it is before there is a quote.
The signs
Blisters in the bitumen, cracks in the cap sheet, seams that have opened up, an upstand coming loose. Or simply: the roof is thirty years old and you want to know where you stand.
What comes to light under the old roof
Only once the old covering is off do you see what it was lying on. Sometimes that is bone-dry decking and the build-up can start straight away. Sometimes the timber is dark with moisture, the boards sag or the insulation is saturated. That is exactly why I would rather replace completely than overlay blindly: on a wet substrate even a new layer of felt fails within a few years. Whatever I find, I show you before it is closed up.

What kind of roof is it?
If the old covering is lying dry and flat, a new layer of bitumen can go over it. That saves stripping out and carting away.
If there is moisture between the layers or the insulation is soaked, everything comes off down to the decking and we build up again.
