Roofs with solar panels, and what you notice of it

What the work involves

Roofs with solar panels

I hand over roofs that are ready for panels, and repair roofs that already carry them. If there are panels on a roof that needs replacing, they come off and go back on afterwards. Taking them off and refitting them is something I arrange during the work, together with your installer, so you have nothing to sort out yourself. If the panels only need shifting to reach part of the roof, I take care of that in the same way. People having panels fitted regularly choose a white cap sheet rather than a black one. That is your own choice; I hand the roof over in the finish you want.

When you need this

The signs

Before you have panels fitted: have the roof checked first. And for leaks under existing panels, where the outlets and the fixing points are the most common cause.

Practical

The order is half the job

A panel lasts twenty-five years, a bitumen roof twenty to thirty. If those two do not run together, the panels have to come off once along the way. So with solar panels the question is really always the same: how old is the roof underneath. If it is still young, I set it up for panels during a renovation: fixing points and cable entry in the right place. If an array is already there, I arrange the removal and refitting with your installer.

What people ask about this

Do the panels have to come off for a new roof?

Yes. The covering runs underneath them, so working around them is not possible. Removing and refitting them is something I arrange during the work, together with your installer.

My roof leaks under the panels. Can you get at it?

Usually yes. The leak is almost always at a fixing point or the cable entry, and those can be reached without dismantling the whole array.

I want panels fitted. What do I do first?

Have the roof checked. If it turns out to have years left, the panels can go on. If it is due for replacement, this is the moment to do that first.

What it might involve

What kind of roof is it?

Preparing a roof for panels

New roofing with the fixing points and the cable entry already planned in, so the installer can get straight to work.

Panels off and back on

If there is already an array on a roof that needs replacing, I arrange the removal and refitting during the work.

Shifting panels

If only part of the roof has to be opened, the panels move aside temporarily rather than coming off entirely.

Leaks under existing panels

Usually at a fixing point or the cable entry. Traceable without dismantling the whole array.

Fitting a cable entry

A dedicated penetration with a good collar, torched in watertight. Safer than running the cables past the roof edge.

White or black cap sheet

Under panels people regularly choose white rather than black. Your choice; I hand the roof over in the finish you want.
