The roofs of Delft, and what that means for you

The roofs here

The roofscape of Delft

In the old centre of Delft many small flat roofs sit behind the facades: extensions, sheds and roof terraces, often in awkward places. Tanthof, Voorhof and Buitenhof date from the sixties to the eighties and have generous, straightforward roof areas instead.

What I look for

What that means for your roof

Delft is at the edge of my service area. For a roof renovation or a larger job I am glad to come; for a small repair I first check whether it can be combined with other work nearby. Do call, and I will say straight away whether I am the right man.

Practical

What makes a job here worth the trip

Delft is the furthest corner of my service area, so I am honest about when I am the right man. For a full roof renovation, a roof terrace or a larger area I am glad to come: that is work worth making the drive for. For a small repair I check whether it can be combined with other work in the area. One phone call and you know straight away where you stand, instead of waiting a week for an answer.

What people in Delft ask

Would you come to Delft for one small roof?

That depends. I would rather say honestly whether I am the right man than leave you waiting. One phone call and you know.

Do you do roof terraces in the old centre?

Yes. On a terrace the covering lies beneath the tiles, so those have to come up first. That sounds roundabout, but it is the only way to see what is really going on underneath.

How does the material get up at a canal-side property?

Usually through the house or with a hoist along the facade. I check that when measuring up, and if space on the quay is needed I apply for the permit.

By neighbourhood

Where in Delft is your roof?

Old centre

Narrow premises along the canals. Flat roofs tucked behind the facade, with roof terraces and extensions on inner courtyards.

Hof van Delft and Vrijenban

Pre-war streets with extensions behind the houses. Small areas with many corners and junctions against the neighbours.

Post-war high-rise with large continuous roof areas, gravel on top and an upstand all round.

Buitenhof

Sixties and seventies, low-rise and blocks mixed together, with flat extensions and sheds in rows.

Tanthof

Seventies and eighties, generously laid out. Family houses with a flat extension, carport or shed.

Wippolder and Harnaschpolder
